Question for you?

In the Road home, why do you think the film director Zhang Yimou chose to have the present day in black and white, and the past shown in color? If you were the director would you have chosen to do it this way, if not how would you have done it?

  1. In the Road home, I think the film director Zhang Yimou chose to have the present day in black and white because it reflected the grief the woman had of her husband's death, as well as a way to show the lost vibrancy of old age. The past shown in color because the woman was happy and falling in love. Also it can be a way to show the vibrancy of youth. If I were the director I would have chosen to do it this way because I feel it gives the film a lot of inner symbolism than if it was done with color throughout the whole film. Morgan Raddatz

  2. I agree with what Morgan said on the use of black and white as the present. I thought the past being in color was amazing because Di was in a happy time in her life. She met the love of her life and you could see that through the color of the film. You could really see the symbolism during the past compared to the present besides items that they may have been using.

  3. I agree that the use of black and white was to show the grief represented by the teachers death during the present time. I believe color was used to show the symbolism behind various objects that you wouldn't have noticed if the past was in black and white (the use of the color red, the significance of the banner). Having the past be shown in color allows the viewers to make the connection between the symbolism in the past and in the present. It also shows off the happier feelings Di had when she was falling in love.

  4. I think Zhang Yimou chose to put the past in color because that was a much more vibrant time. In the film, the present day was sad. it was a time of grief. In the flashbacks, there was more happiness. As a director, I probably would have done the same thing to show the contrast between happy, innocent youth and a period of bereavement.

  5. The color transitions in the film, I believe, are suppose to represent Di's feeling of love - the warmth of the colors and the color symbolism conveys the love they share. The black and white conveys the loneliness and the lost of love Di is experiencing. The transition of color and the past comes in and out as Di remembers the love she had all under her grief and mourning as her son teaches the children at the school. I loved that the director did this color transition to reflect the past and Di's feelings. I don't think it should of been any different. It might lose the significance and symbolism of the film subtext.
